Statement and Welcoming Remarks by Senator Jesse Raglmar-SUBOLMAR for the 17th Micronesians in Island Conservation (MIC) Network Retreat Sunday, June 1, 2014 Yap Pacific Dive Resort Colonia, Yap, Federated States of Micronesia Participants, ladies and gentlemen, It is my distinct pleasure to formally welcome you to Yap on behalf of the leadership of the State of Yap, especially those of you who have come from our other islands in Micronesia and those who have come from afar to participate in this important Retreat. It is naturally very important because to us the importance of management and conservation of our resources and our environment is second to none. It is an immense opportunity for this Retreat to take place in Yap and we welcome that and are grateful for the decision to hold the Retreat here in Yap. We do have many shortcomings and we apologize ahead for them and we hope you will have an understanding heart. Our people will nonetheless do their out most to ensure that your Retreat accomplish its purpose and that you leave with greater understanding of our islands as well as our commitment to the causes for which the MIC Network stand. It is with heartfelt gratitude for me to learn that your network is on strengthening conversation leaders and organizations to ensure effective conservation and management of the natural resources of our islands for the benefit of the owners, the people of these islands. I applaud the efforts of the MIC Network to keep the leaders and communities aware and involve in the conservation and management of their resources. We hope that your three-day Retreat here will provide an open and conducive atmosphere for fruitful discussions and important exchanges of views regarding conservation and best management practices. In that regard, I would like to point out the vital need for your group to support an effort to bring about greater understanding of our ways, our tradition of managing our resources for in my view that unavoidably must be how we manage our resources to achieve the balance between utilization and conservation of the resources for durable benefit to our people now and in the future. We pride ourselves here in Yap that the front line stewardship of our resources is in hands of our communities and they are today taking the lead in the stewardship of our resources for the benefit of not just the people today but the many generations to come in the future. MIC Retreat Speech Page 2 I am told that you have a field trip this afternoon to the Tamil Municipality and we hope that will showcase the committed spirit and enthusiasm of our communities for they are the force, strength and leadership behind any and all effective management efforts in our State. I have taken much of your time and I wish to thank you again for holding your 17th MIC Retreat in Yap and again I welcome you whole heartedly to Yap on behalf of the leadership and wish you a successful Retreat. Thank you very much.
