Steel City Wanderers U10s: Team: Maisie Palmer(GK): Samantha Hunnam: Isobel Dennell: Phoebe Hague: Erin Parkinson: Erica Flynn: Katie Fetches: Kate Davies(Team Captain): This was their first Tournament as U10s and was a much tougher one than the Carcroft Tournament with 5 teams to play in the qualifying rounds. The first was Carcroft and this time Steels won 2-0 with the goals coming from Erica staight from a corner and Isobel stealing into the area finishing a lovely move. The second match was against a very good AFC Manchester team which finished 0-0. The next match was against Sheffield United Community Ladies and Steels scored the only goal with a nice finish from new girl Katie. Up next from Sheffield Wednesday, Steels had all of the play but were unable to break down the Wednesday defence and had to settle for a draw. The last match of the qualifiers was against Bolden and were defeated by a late penalty. After all the scores were in Steels were in the semis playing the team they lost to Bolden. It was a very tight game with both teams defending well but this time lady luck smiled on Steels being awarded a harsh penalty late on when the ref deemed a throw from their keeper was overarm, but the Captain Kate stepped up and buried it in the bottom right hand corner. So to the final - this was against the very good AFC Manchester team which both teams played very well but no score at the end so it went to extra time and golden goal. Winning the toss was crucial as there was a slight slope of the pitch and whoever was kicking uphill after playing 6 matches in a 5-6 hour period would be feeling tired, unfortunately AFC Manchester got the break and kicked downhill. Under constant pressure from the off Steels succombed after 2 minutes when a corner fell to the oppositions best player in the middle of the area and she blasted it into the net. So the steels had to settle for runners up but have now competed in 2 finals in 2 weeks and have shown they are a good team in the making.
