(Stefanie) Gert Bezuidenhout Street, in Minnebron, rang with the sound of gunshots during the early hours of Friday morning, last week, as Brakpan police and suspected burglars exchanged gunfire. 26 November 2014 According to information received from the SAPS, police officers received a report of three suspicious-looking men at a property along Ryan Street, at about 1.35am. While en route to the address, however, the officers saw the suspects walking along Gert Bezuidenhout Street. “When the suspects saw the police vehicle they ran towards the veld and the officers gave chase,” said Capt Joep Joubert, spokesperson for the Brakpan Police Station Commander. “The suspects entered the veld and the officers got out of the vehicle to chase them on foot. “One of the suspects opened fire on the police, who then returned fire.” Police shot one of the men, injuring him on the left buttock, while the others fled the scene and evaded capture. “A bag containing house-breaking implements was found in the suspect’s possession,” added Joubert. The man was taken to the Far East Rand Hospital under police guard and will appear in court when he is medically fit to do so. He faces a charge of being in possession of housebreaking implements.
