(Stefanie) Security company alleges police defeated ends of justice A security company that responded to a house break-in and arrested three suspects claims that the police defeated the ends of justice by releasing two of the three suspects. Thokozile Mnguni | 19 April 2014 08:00 A security company from Centurion has opened a case against police officers at the Wierdabrug police station for allegedly defeating the ends of justice. Copwatch security claims that after they arrested three of the five suspects involved in an attempted house break-in in Eldoraigne, the suspects tried to bribe their reaction officer with R500. It has been indicated that upon arrival of the security company, one of the five suspects was arrested and along the way, he offered to bribe the reaction officer with R500 in order for him to not be arrested. “We then agreed to his request and this led to us arresting two more suspects, who brought the money from their vehicle,” explained Samuel Phahlamohlaka from Copwatch. According to Phahlamohlaka, the suspects, who were travelling in a white Condor, attempted to break into a house on Willem Botha Street and, when the alarm went off, they jumped to the next house, setting off this alarm as well. Two of the suspects who were still in the white Condor managed to flee, but the arrested three were taken to the Wierdabrug police station together with their house break-in equipment and were handed over to the officers on duty. Phahlamohlaka said they returned to the police station to check whether a case was opened and whether everything was recorded, including the R500 bribe money. They were shocked to find out that two suspects had been released and the bribe money was never recorded anywhere. A case was opened against the suspects, but only one remained in jail, the others had been released. According to reaction officer Phahlamohlaka, this led to them opening a case (250/04/2014) against the police for theft and defeating the ends of justice. Rekord sent an inquiry to the Wierdabrug police station and police spokesperson Agnes Huma confirmed that a case had been opened against the police for theft and defeating the ends of justice and that investigations would be conducted. She added that the arrested suspect would appear in court soon.
