Stencil Revolutions Friday Featured Artist this week is the multi-talented multi-media artist Noir. What initially attracted us to this artists work was the raw energy that it exuded in a most graphic way. On the one hand brut and on the other delicate, Noirs work demands attention on both fronts. And...while it seems as though there is humor hiding about in this artists work, one never knows if it is really a laughing matter. Noir explained to me that it was the early D.I.Y Punk scene that drew this artist to stenciling, printing t-shirts, without noticing that stencilism could be an art form too. Noir ultimately came to realize that stencil was, the perfect medium to duplicate works really fast and really easy at home , which fits well with Noirs modus operandi- To digest all the scrap around and create my own images out of it. In a bit of pre-interview chat, Noir voiced a current sense of dissatisfaction with the art of stencil presently and I asked what it was all about. Im a little bit bored that so many stencilworks look the same, including mine. Noir attributes this to so many people producing stencils using the same photo-shop formula, ending up with a finished product that looks the same as the image they started with...a soul-less thing. Noir aptly describes the finished product of this process as a diligent but routine piece of work like color-by-number. Not to worry however, Noir has not sworn off stencil but has turned more toward collage, which the artist explains is really the groundwork for stencil. Attracted to the freedom and enormous potential output, Noir collects collages and then decides whether they stay as collage or become the basis for stencils or screenworks. Advice to beginning stencil artists? Noir is very to-the-point: Get a sharp knife, some cardboard, a spraycan and take care of your fingers.
