Stephanie Marie Powell is a California native and currently a tenured Professor of Dance at Long Beach City College. She earned her Master of Fine Arts in Dance with distinction from the University of California at Irvine as a Chancellor’s Fellow and was honored with the Celebration of Teaching Award from the Claire Trevor School of the Arts. Ms. Powell’s dance training began in Bakersfield, California and her studies continued on scholarship with Pacific Northwest Ballet and the School of American Ballet. She received her B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley in Sociology and Education while dancing professionally with the Oakland Ballet Company. Other companies in her concert dance career include the San Francisco Opera, Moving Arts, Robert Henry Johnson Dance Company, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Donald Byrd the Group, Las Vegas Contemporary Dance Theatre and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Ms. Powell performed in the Los Angeles production of the Lion King, and has modeled internationally for Redken and Trevor Sorbie of the UK. She has appeared on television and danced commercially for artists such as MC Hammer, Kenny G., Janet Jackson, and Beyonce Knowles. She is a certified instructor of the New York City Ballet Workout and is the principal interpreteur of Donald McKayles choreographic works. Ms. Powell performs her solo choreography internationally and has presented her research at the Congress on Research in Dance. As a testament to her reputation and contributions, Powell was a recipient of the Long Beach Post Award for Best Teacher in the City of Long Beach, she was a nominee for Woman of the Year Award by the 54th Assembly Districts Assembly member Bonnie Lowenthal and was recently awarded the Black Leadership Advancement Coalition Alumni Award from UC Irvine. She has taught Ballet, Pointe, Modern dance and Pilates at Summer Intensive Programs for LINES Ballet, Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Company, Dallas Black Dance Theater, Dimensions Dance Academy, New Orleans Ballet Association and many more. Ms. Powell is a co-host of the International Association of Blacks in Dance Conference for Las Vegas, 2014.
