Stephen Keshis appointment as Nigeria coach has seen an upturn in fortunes. Where previous Nigeria coaches either stuck him in the same holding role as at Chelsea, or pushed him forward with little protection, Keshi has found a way to unlock the Mikel of yore. He has handed him a free role, where Mikel can either drop deep to reprise his role at Chelsea, or push forward to orchestrate the teams offensive routines. The key being that he does so of his own volition, his own assessment of the play. With the shackles gone, Mikel looks totally reborn. And suddenly, the adulation is back. He is playing close to his best football. He destroyed Yaya Touré and the Ivorians at the Nations Cup, then took it one step further by dominating a Spain midfield including Xavi and Iniesta at the Confederations Cup, the highlight of which was an audacious chip over and turn to get away from the Spanish midfielder. - Colin Udoh
