Stephen King, says this about the casting of Nicholson, He didn’t like the casting of Jack Nicholson, claiming, “Jack Nicholson, though a fine actor, was all wrong for the part. His last big role had been in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and between that and the manic grin, the audience automatically identified him as a loony from the first scene. But the book is about Jack Torrance’s gradual descent into madness through the malign influence of the Overlook—if the guy is nuts to begin with, then the entire tragedy of his downfall is wasted.” I love The Shining and Love Jack Nicholson but think King has a valid point. Nicholsons Jack Torrence is already creepy and weird to begin with. Think of Bryan Cranstons transformation of bland, underachieving, nerdy Walt White to the amoral, ruthless, manipulative, Hiesenburg. (Recall how he was joyfully whistling when he was setting up his machine gun. LOL) If they cast an actor like Mickey Rourke, already known to be a tough guy and play villains before, Breaking Bad wouldnt have worked. I now wouldve like to see The Shining with a more transformative actor.
