Steve signing in at 7:53 AM. Precipitation continues through much - TopicsExpress

Steve signing in at 7:53 AM. Precipitation continues through much of the 4 county area with temperatures well above freezing along the I-40 corridor, mostly low to mid 40s. The western edge of the precipitation shield is now entering Black Mountain and the Old Fort area and should steadily shift eastward throughout the day, reaching Hickory by around noon time or shortly thereafter. As far as snow is concerned, other than the top of Beech Mountain, I havent seen many reports. Even the NW parts of our counties are reporting temperatures in the mid to upper 30s. However, rain has just changed over to snow at Boone in the past hour, so it is possible that rain may mix with a little snow before ending in places like North Cove and Jonas Ridge. Parts of the area, especially from Burke County westward may be lucky enough to see a little sunshine this afternoon but temperatures will probably stay below 50° all day. Tonight, another system now entering western Tennessee should race across the area, bringing another quick shot of precipitation during the early morning hours of Thanksgiving Day. This system appears to be a little farther south than the models predicted so we may get a little more out of it than currently forecast as it scoots eastward across the area. The question is whether well get rain or snow or a mixture of both. I am thinking that the mountains to our north and west will get mainly snow and a couple inches may fall before its all over. The northwest communities of our counties may see some snow, maybe a half-inch or so. Im not sure the I-40 corridor (Marion, Morganton, Hickory) is going to see much snow at all. Temperatures look a little too warm (mid to upper 30s at this point) and the freezing or snow level only falls to 2,400 feet early Thanksgiving morning. Even if we do see a little wet snow, I dont think its going to amount to much. Skies should clear out slowly Thanksgiving Day but the best place to be is probably indoors enjoying Thanksgiving dinner and watching football games. It will be a little breezy and quite chilly outdoors with high temperatures mainly in the low and mid 40s. After a chilly start to Black Friday with mid 20s in the morning (shoppers bundle up), we should see sunny skies and mid 40s during the afternoon. The weekend warms up dramatically and by Sunday, afternoon temperatures are likely to be in the 60s. Next cold front is scheduled for Tuesday of next week.
