Steve signing in at 8:01 AM. Happy Thanksgiving, all. Fog has developed over much of the I-40 corridor this morning from Burke County eastward. Temperatures are just above freezing ranging from 33° at the Foothills AP to 37° at Morganton and Valdese. The fog should burn off in another couple hours but my main concern is possible ice on some of the roadways, especially in Caldwell County near Lenoir and Granite Falls with temperatures so close to the freezing point. Interestingly, temperatures are below zero in parts of the upper Midwest and northern Plains. Jamestown, North Dakota, just off I-94 in east central North Dakota (I remember that area well, having lived there for a few years) reports -23°, unusual even for North Dakota in November. It appears that the core of this colder air will stay to our north and west though were apt to see some chilly weather for the next couple days. We should see sunny skies later today across the I-40 corridor. High temperatures should be in the upper 40s but a gusty northwest wind will make it feel like the mid and upper 30s outdoors. In the mountains the northwest flow snow machine is likely to kick into gear later this morning and some communities closer to the Tennessee border could get from 2 to 4 inches of accumulating snow. Locally, the escarpment (North Cove to Jonas Ridge) could see maybe a dusting and the corridor could see a few remnant clouds this afternoon that havent been ripped apart by the downslope NW flow. In fact, that flow may be the main reason we reach the upper 40s because the wind is expected to be calmer Friday and we may only reach the low to mid 40s for high temperatures. A steady moderation in temperatures begins this weekend. Highs Saturday should reach the mid to upper 50s, low to mid 60s Sunday and Monday with mainly sunny skies. Another front brings the chance for a few rain showers Monday night into Tuesday followed by slightly cooler air but temperatures start to warm up again by midweek next week.
