Steve signing in at 8:41 AM. Skies are clear but temperatures are a mixed bag again this morning ranging from 36F at the Foothills AP to 51F at Hickory, mainly 40s along the I-40 corridor. All of us will warm up nicely today with a noticeable southwesterly breeze, afternoon temperatures in the upper 70s. The only downside of a day like today is that the early season trees, especially the Bradford Pears, are beginning to bloom so those of you with allergies, take note, this afternoon could be a little difficult. While well see a good bit of sun this afternoon, high clouds are likely to increase late. Clouds will lower and thicken overnight, holding temperatures into the 50s, with light rain showers developing a few hours before dawn, ahead of an approaching warm front. The warm front should move through Wednesday morning, bringing occasional showers but by noon, rains should end for a few hours and we may even see intermittent sunshine. This should push temperatures back into the middle 70s before a pretty strong cold front approaches Wednesday evening. Southwest winds will be stronger tomorrow afternoon with gusts in excess of 30, possibly 40mph, at times. Ahead of the cold front, showers and thunderstorms are likely to develop later Wednesday afternoon. While short-range models are showing sufficient wind shear and turning with height, they are not showing very much instability at all in the counties. So the threat of severe thunderstorms at this point is still quite low and, in fact, we may not get much lightning or thunder with the passing line of showers Wednesday afternoon. I saw better instability in the Greensboro area and northward. This could change over the next 24 hours so check back for evening updates and my update tomorrow morning. Right now, though, the biggest weather impact tomorrow is likely to be the gusty southwest winds and a changeover to snow showers in the mountains Wednesday night behind the cold front. An even bigger impact Thursday will be the colder temperatures in the mid and upper 40s, instead of 70s, Thursday afternoon, with an active northwesterly breeze not helping matters. At least skies should be mostly sunny along the I-40 corridor with snow showers ending in the mountains. The cold weather departs nearly as quickly as it arrived with moderating temperatures to near normal levels by the weekend and, right now, not much weather to deal with. The next system could affect us early next week, possibly beginning on St Patricks Day. The long-range models are having a tough time with the timing, placement and strength of this system so Ill hold off saying more about it until I get better information. There is a chance that colder air could move back into the counties just in time for the vernal equinox on March 20.
