Steven says: Dear humble, Stoppage of XP support means no more patches against new threats. Microsoft will still support some customers on a custom support plan. These cost millions, but a number of end users are banks. I think something like half of all ATMs run XP. Ill see what I can find for transition advice. Here is a list of those MIT reports, done in 1977 for implementation by 1986. The ghosts of 30 and even 40 years ago. Now we just talk about one person or two on explosive oil trains balancing safety vs cost, or maybe the XL pipeline. Its all nonsense. Smart people knew what the options were 40 years ago. Further than that, actually. The first grid-connected generator powered by wind was put online in 1940, in West Rutland, VT. See Palmer Putnam, Power from the Wind. They had big geniuses working on that project. Von Karmann himself designed the turbine blades. A word about solar. Although PV panels have come a long way, I think these reports anticipated using solar for heating some working fluid that then ran a heat engine (Stirling cycle, probably) to turn a generator shaft. The point is, all the buzz-words of today were not only in play, but were actively being worked on, 40 years ago. Note that all of this alternative energy work took place during the Carter administration. When Reagan came in, all that work was shut down. Regards, ++ Yes. There is a man who lives not far from here who was forced to go to Europe when Reagan shut down research pertaining to sustainable energy. Didnt he even take the solar collectors off the White House? I liked Reagan but he was a dinosaur who did more to mess up how radio and television are managed and sustainable energy than anyone of his era. Remember Trickle down? Give to the rich and some of it will trickle down to people on minimum wage. Any surplus tricked down into bank accounts in the Caymans. Im hoping to get to see the solar guru within a month or go. He continued working on solar research in Sweden, I think, for years until he recently came back here. Its nice to know gurus. Isnt it amazing that this young scientist, who wanted to improve the technology that would give every Maine home free energy and make us independent of the oil companies, had to move to Sweden to do it. Republicans.
