Stevens update - Sorry for the delay in updating; been a crazy couple of days. Since the failed effort on Wednesday to extubate, things have turned to trial and more trial. The Pulmonary, Radiology and Cardiology departments have been looking at the same information and coming up with different things to try. Bottom line – he had the heart catheter – which according to Radiology didn’t show blockages – but according to Cardiology there were blockages. What they both agreed on was they could not find the graft from a previous by-pass. They must have asked 20 times if I was sure he had indeed had a by-pass --- I calmly point to the scar on his chest, and the leg where they took the graft. Not much more I can do to prove that it had been done. Talk to any three doctors and get three separate responses to the same questions. He has been pretty awake and alert – but gets frustrated as he tried to communicate – obviously can’t talk, and he couldn’t write with any success. And he didn’t have the patience to pick one letter at a time from the alphabet board. So needless to say – he spent a bit of time pretty agitated. Yesterday and today they wanted to do a chest tube to remove the fluid from in and around his lungs – but fortunately – the x-ray this morning showed it had pretty much cleared with medication. So at 1pm today – he was once again extubated. Hopefully the tube will stay out this time. Currently he is using a PPAP machine on and off – and breathing treatments along with the medications to keep fluids from building back up. At this point we are a little uncertain to the next steps or even what is possible. It all depends on whether he can continue to breathe on his own. Thank you all again for your continued thoughts and prayers.
