Still thinking about the Eusja meeting of European science - TopicsExpress

Still thinking about the Eusja meeting of European science journalists last Saturday. It had quite aggressive moments. How is it possible that civilized people do not know how to behave in a meeting? You are supposed to speak when it is your turn and not to interrupt others and you should stop at some point, for instance. Also thinking about independent journalism. There is no such thing, really isnt, unless you have inherited or won a lot of money from somewhere and print your own media. But we all others are paid from somewhere. And that can always make us dependent - or we can keep our independence. Free journalism is between your ears, only, no matter where the money comes from. I work in a commercial magazine that lives partly from subscription fees, partly from advertisements. We have never pulled back a story because an advertiser has threatened to stop advertising in our media. One of our subsribers was a big trade union. The boss of the union got mad about a story in our paper which did not please him. So he canceled the subscription and we lost about a third of our readers. What was worse, he joined one of our rival companies and they put up a newspaper that was an exact rival for us. That was three years ago. We are still alive and kicking. The rival is dead. And I never think about who pays my salary. But I do think about honesty and fairness. I try to be as honest and fair as I can. And as good as I can be. Cant be better.
