Stone Parish memorial number 53 Alfred Arthur HIBBEN Private 1st Battalion Royal West Kent Regiment (Queens Own). Service Number S/9086. 5th Division. Alfred joined the Royal West Kent Special Reserve on 1/4/1914 stating his age as 17 years, 248 days when in fact he was only just 16 having been born in the 1st 3 months of 1898. He was mobilised on the outbreak of war on 4/8/1914 but not posted to France until 13/1/1915 which still made him under the 19 years required to fight in the army abroad! (He was still only 17 in reality!!) On 22/7/1916 the 1st RWK attacked the South Eastern corner of High Wood after an artillery bombardment. No significant gains were made but the RWK suffered 420 casualties, approx 50% of those who went over the top. Presumed killed 22/7/1916 age 18. Body not recovered. Commemorated on Thiepval Memorial. Son of Arthur & Elizabeth Hibben of 47 Milestone Road Stone.
