Stories like this remind us that our teammates truly make a difference in the lives of our patients and their families. We are so thankful for our teammates in the centers. Know that you make a difference! This touching story was sent to us by a DaVita teammate: I was a bit out of my normal routine because I had an eye doctor appointment before heading to … DaVita to teach Machine Set-up to some of our new teammates. I tell you this so you can follow my path… While I was checking out of the eye doctor the secretary noticed my DaVita logo on my scrub top and asked which one I worked at; then she told me her father runs at a DaVita center, and he is fairly new to dialysis. She then proceeded to explain to me how helpful everyone has been, from the dietitian to the nurses. Her dad knows what to eat and what not to eat. Her mom is following the renal diet as well. She mentioned many other things over the next 10 minutes, then she thanked me. I told her no problem, then she said No really, thank you for what you all do, my dad got to go to my son’s graduation last weekend because of what you do. She said it firmly but with authority, as if she demanded that I understand. I touched her hand and said You’re Welcome!” I left the eye doctor’s office and was a bit overwhelmed, as I am from time to time, with the gift we can provide. Dialysis is giving her dad a little more time with his family. My next quick stop was McDonald’s which was way off of my normal routine, but I wanted a sausage burrito before I got to (work). I walked in because the drive-thru was very busy. I was quickly waited on by a friendly lady who took my order. She then asked which DaVita I worked at, I explained…. and then she told me that she had received a kidney transplant in March 2013 and that she was on peritoneal and hemo before transplant. She then handed me my burrito and said: “I thank God every day for people like you, have a good day.” Needless to say, those two made my day. No matter what hustle and bustle the day brought me yesterday, those two grounded me and made me proud to “do what we do.” This quote hangs in my office, and I wanted to share it with all of you… Sometimes I inspire my patients; More often they inspire me.
