Story speculation time. What if the entire game takes place in this limbo, in the words of the caretaker, This is a Limbo. A link between Drangleic and the outer world. What does that mean? Theyre in a hut just outside of Majula, there is no vortex separating them from Majula or Drangleic, you drop into the vortex and never leave. So logically from what she is saying is Drangliec is completely separate from the outside world. In the opening cutscene the old lady says a long time ago a great king built a great kingdom and assumes you never knew of it, and says how could you? As if it existed so long ago it would have been forgotten about by everyone. She then says youll stand before its decrepit gate, and what does the player do next? He approaches a ruined city and reflected in the water is behold, a decrepit gate! It opens and turns the waters into a vortex which you fall into. You arrived at Drangleic in the present by boat but are then thrust into an undead limbo where a form of Drangleic exists and is preserved so to speak via the memories of its inhabitants. You speak with lost NPC souls claiming this land is Drangleic, and yet Drangleic supposedly existed long ago according to the old lady. Now Ive checked through the guide looking for living people and creatures and the closest I can find are the Mastodon Knights and the parasite spiders. But, the Mastodons come to life from statues, hardly a living thing. The spiders could be a manifestation, something symbolic, a phobia perhaps that symbolizes how fears control people. Human Effigy, this bugged me at first because I didnt like their removal of humanity items, but then this makes perfect sense in a limbo or realm of dead. Effigy: A roughly made model of a particular person, made in order to be damaged or destroyed as a protest or expression of anger. Your character and others inhabiting this limbo WANT to be human again, but cant be a long as theyre trapped here. Humanity would have no place in this realm, you exist in a place where physical things are just assumed to be physical, nothing is material, you cant be human or flesh. You truly died when falling into the vortex and when you look into the effigy you see what you used to be, and what you still yearn to be. Even Targray looks out of place yet thinks nothing of it when in fact hes likely dead, clinging to his duties of knighthood in a sunken city meanwhile other Hiede knights lay about as lost souls. Petrified people. When they became petrified in their time they died, then by releasing them in this realm and waking them up, they dont know where they are and are shocked at their surroundings. Essentially their soul is petrified and you wake their soul up. Phantoms, theyre everywhere. Way more than DS1, and this could be the reason why, phantoms, spirits, undead, symbolic manifestations, and people who are lost seem to be here. In the words of the old merchant lady she claims Majula is the place where people just seem to end up. And even the armor merchant in Majula cant remember why he left home no matter how hard he tries, hes dead. The Milfanitos, women who sing to guide the dead and claim they have never seen the outside world and would have no reason to. Of course not, they belong in this limbo, under the command of The Great Dead One, someone or something we never see. Finally, the last piece and the most important imo, the bosses. First off, Ornstien is dead, but not controlled by Manus, as his soul item is normal not purple. Each boss (spoilers) drops a soul that belongs to a DS1 boss, and what happened to them? They died. The Sinner-The Old Witch Soul (could be any of the chaos witches), The Rotten-Old Dead One soul (Nito), Freja-Old Paledrake soul (seath), Iron King-Old King soul (gwyn had also given the four kings a portion of his soul but in this instance it would be whole), and lastly Nashandra who I believe was human at one point but her soul was corrupted by a piece of Manus and it took over, much like Velstadt, the Guardian and the Watcher. The queen, the guardian/watcher and velstadt were all historical figures, but their souls contaminated by Manus in the afterlife, as shown by their souls, purple and corrupt. The king was also real, as was the war, but as for how they came to be in this limbo is anyones guess. This theory literally occurred to me and I had to post it and it makes me want to re-read the dialogue of the Ancient Dragon and everything the Emerald Herald says and look for more clues to this, but honestly I see more evidence for this theory than evidence against it.
