Storytelling might just be the most subjective exercise going. - TopicsExpress

Storytelling might just be the most subjective exercise going. Consider, for a moment, an argument you had with someone close to you. Consider your point-of-view about what transpired, and then consider his/hers. A quarrel is always a fascinating dramatic construct because it’s about a fundamental disconnect. Maybe something said was considered inappropriate by the other party. Perhaps a small incident - or mistake - sparked a bad exchange. Maybe a far more deeply rooted problem came to light because of that mistake. I have known of marriages that unraveled after one truly unpleasant exchange. Just as I know other couples who seem to exist in a state of permanent low-level conflict. Whether the argument is a mere spat, an edgy exchange, or something far more darker, the fact remains: if recounted to a friend, it is rare for us to admit, ‘Well, I really said something beyond stupid’. Most times we rearrange the narrative to ensure that it shows us in, at worst, not a terrible light. The need to justify is one of the larger components of the human condition. The need to justify - when you privately know that you are in the wrong - is beyond sad. And the person it most destroys is, without question, yourself.
