Strauss Also Sprach Zarathustra was sounding absolutely incredible in rehearsals today - those coming to Lighthouse Poolee & Colston Hall are in for a real treat. Ahead of Kirills epic opening week, it feels right to celebrate the man himself. 6. Kirill & Shostakovich - Kirill Karabits performances of Shostakovich are amongst his most memorable and have all been very popular, especially with our musicians. Death and retrospection lie at the heart of Shostakovich 14, almost a one-act opera in its sense of drama and character. The premiere performance was conducted by past BSO conductor Rudolf Barshai to whom this concert was dedicated. Shostakovich regarded it as one of his greatest achievements, dedicating it to Britten (who gave the UK premiere in 1970). Barshai always wanted to do it with the BSO, but was prevented due to sales forecasts. You may remember Kirill’s wonderful introduction to the concert, where he thanked the audience for supporting this magnificent work. This time last year was the incredibly innovative performance of Shostakovich 10 as part of the ‘Rest is Noise’ Festival at the Royal Festival Hall. Shostakovich was denounced by Stalins henchman Zhdanov for displaying formalist perversions and anti-democratic tendencies alien to the Soviet people in the infamous party decree of 1948. Last but not least, who could forget the Shostakovich 11 which was broadcasted by the BBC and later released as part of the BBC Music Magazine collection? One to look out for this season - Kirill conducts Shostakovich Symphony No.5 at the Lighthouse & Anvil Arts in November. bit.ly/kirillshost VOTE Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra now at uk.bachtrack/worlds-favourite-orchestra-2014 in the race to become Worlds Favourite Orchestra
