Stress – take action! So you’re stressed and not feeling well; you’re tired and hooked on caffeine and sugar. One of the things we seem to do without giving it a moment’s thought when we’re stressed, is to eat junk. This is the last thing we should be doing though I know it’s hard, we all love a sugar or carb ‘fix’. The problem is that the fix has a short term benefit and long term consequences. Stress depletes us of stomach acid which results in decreased absorption of magnesium and magnesium is one of those nutrients that we absolutely must have to make what’s called ATP, which is the major form of energy produced by the body. Our sugar fix depletes us of magnesium which contributes to tiredness and lethargy and if you drink lots of tea, the tannins in the tea bind to magnesium and it’s excreted. So we get into a cycle of eating chocolate, ice cream, biscuits and sweets for energy and eventually end up with even less energy! If you’re under stress, eat lots of dark leafy greens or take a magnesium supplement, the best form for bioavailability are magnesium malate and magnesium citrate. Remember that your skin is the first place stress shows up; help minimise the effects and minimise the damage to your skin. It makes sense!
