Struck by what beautiful, compassionate first year medical students I have. Todays patient case for discussion was a complicated one on suicide, depression, substance use and domestic violence. Its the first time they have encountered these topics in detail in the course and they did so well. We can teach all the facts on pharmacology, physiology and neurobiology we like.... compassion is so much harder to teach.... but we can foster compassion. .. we can role model compassion.... we can acknowledge how vital it is and how wonderful it is to possess and display compassion. In answer to question What management would you like to consider at this point? one student said Give this patient a hug. My day was made! :)
