Structural maintenance of chromosomes (SMC) proteins (SMC1-6) - TopicsExpress

Structural maintenance of chromosomes (SMC) proteins (SMC1-6) belong to a family of ATPases that heterodimerize to form the cores of several essential higher-order chromatin-organizing complexes, including condensins (SMC2/4), cohesins (SMC1/3), and the SMC5/6 complex. These complexes are involved in many of the most fundamental processes governing chromatin dynamics, including chromosome condensation and resolution, sister chromatid cohesion, DNA repair, dosage compensation, and gene expression, among others. Thus, they are crucial guardians/effectors of genomic integrity and function.
