Stuart Gray, the Sheffield Wednesdayhead coach, hopes to complete the signing of midfielder Florian Tardieu before the end of their five-day pre-season training camp in Slovenia. The Owls, who return to these shores on Thursday, have agreed an undisclosed transfer fee with Istres for the 22-year-old, who played 32 times, hitting three goals, for the French outfit last season. Indeed, Gray spoke to Tardieu’s representatives last week but insists he is unable to complete a deal to sign the talented midfielder until the Football League have approved Azerbaijani businessman Hafiz Mammadov’s takeover of Wednesday. The Owls chief, who is reportedly interested in re-signing Blackburn Rovers striker Leon Best, has outlined the qualities Tardieu will bring to the team should he join the Championship club He told The Star: “Florian is a creative midfielder. He has got a good range of passing with both feet. He can pass it short or long and he’s got a good engine. Hopefully we can get it sorted before we comeback from Slovenia.” Tardieu, contracted to Istres until 2016, could not prevent the club from slipping out of Ligue 2.
