Representatives from various schools and colleges were seen walking in solidarity to seek justice for the 1st year student from Sikkim, and also to protest against the Visva Bharati Authorities attempt at hushing up the matter. Speaking to TheDC a senior student leader Sanjeeb Subedi Chhetri said, given the downpour from early morning, we were worried that we would have to call off the rally today... but despite it all the students showed up and though the number could have been much more had the weather cooperated... but we were buoyed by the turn out today and decided to go ahead with the rally Armed with handmade posters, the students made their message loud and clear, one poster which stood out due to its content read Time to Bring Gentle-Men Back an obvious retort at the BHADRALOK status which the Visva Bharati community lays claim to. Another poster took a twist on the popular Keep Calm.. posters read, Dont Keep Calm... Stop Violence Against Women. The rally which snaked through the town ended up at the Darjeeling District Magistrates office where from the students sent a memorandum to the President of India MHRD Govt of India Smriti Zubin Irani, CHief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee, GTA Chief Bimal Gurung Official and Honble Education Minister Partha Chatterjee through the District Magistrate, Darjeeling seeking their intervention to ensure justice for the student from Sikkim. The students have demanded swift and fair investigation into the matter, and also action against Visva Bharati authorities who have tried to hush up the matter. Clarifying the need for protest, Sanjeeb added, We cannot allow anyone to get away with such an heinous crime.. and attempts at sweeping the whole matter under the rug... today they have done this with a student from Sikkim, tomorrow it could be someone from Darjeeling... and the day after someone from Kolkata... students are the same everywhere... and we appeal to our fellow students all over India to come out in protest... and show solidarity with our sister from Sikkim. The GJVM has thanked all the schools and colleges that participated in todays rally and have in particular thanked the students who came out to protest despite such a heavy downpour. [Pics: TheDC]
