Students! There are still openings in this great class for the fall semester! Check it out: PUPPETS AND PERFORMING OBJECTS THEA 397.67 ; THC 760.72 Tu, F. 3:45-5:00 HN536 The objective of the course is to introduce students to the wide range of possibilities performing objects offer to the stage. Through readings, lectures, and videos, students will be introduced to the history of puppetry, to important puppet traditions from around the world, and to the wide variety of ways contemporary artists are using performing objects today. Through in-class workshops and projects, students will get some hands-on practice in manipulating and building simple objects and, more importantly, in learning how to think like a puppeteer. Through practice, they will begin to conceptualize valuable ways of using performing objects in a theatrical context. Students will be asked to watch puppetry, through videos and live performances, and practice articulating aesthetic principles at work in performance. Graduate Students especially will be introduced to foundational texts in puppetry aesthetics and theory. Through advanced readings, presentations, and research, Graduate Students will begin to explore the scholarly field of puppetry research and the possibilities offered for further research and writing projects.
