Stumbled across this and thought it brought up a great point that Id share. Many people Ive come across in my training have been very muscular, and in comparison looked to be near double my size, and yet they havent been able to push me around in quite the way theyd expected. This is because when youre going to the gym for weight lifting and doing what generally gets you those very pretty muscles, youre developing generalized muscles, rather than ones that have been specifically developed for an action. So while the guy in white (the body builder) is quite obviously bigger than his opponent, his muscles have never been trained to push in the way hes trying to make them now, and he ends up getting man handled. So whats the point in all this? Simply put: as martial artists we should never use the overly muscular gym goer as a striving point for ourselves; as we train our bodies for specialized actions. Instead if you need something to judge yourself by, just ask yourself this: Am I able to do what Im trying to do? and if so, follow it up with: Can I do it better? This of course is not to say dont go to gyms or lift weights. Its just saying keep in mind what your end goal is, and try not to compare yourself with those that have different end goals.
