Subject: Pharmacist Corner Spring Cleaning Spring is a perfect time to clean out your Medicine cupboard. Do you know in a recent survey of 500 people that 54% of individuals threw their medications in the garbage and 35% flushed their medications down the toilet or sink. These medications can then be leached into the water table and contaminate nearby water supplies. These medications can then be ingested and have a medicinal effect on wildlife and people. This may negatively affect the health of these same individuals. Did you know that Pharmasave has a program to collect and safely dispose of prescription medications that are expired or no longer needed. We can also collect and safely dispose of all over the counter medications and natural health products except shampoos, mouthwash and antiperspirants all at no charge to patients. Pharmasave also has a program to safely dispose of syringes and needles. We can collect these if returned in a rigid plastic container. This same survey found that 37% of people reported having leftover medications from a previous illness. Medications for infections are best taken until finished to prevent resistance to antibiotics and fully treat disease. Some medications like Tetracycline if expired can have a toxic effect on patients, and are best brought in for disposal if expired. Spring is a great time to assess all your medications.
