Subject: Todays Vancouver Sun Letters to the Editor Local hunters deserve more; New proposal smells of patronage, raises crucial questions Re: B.C. hunters edged out, group fears, Dec. 11 The new wildlife allocation proposal, favouring guide outfitters over residents, is an outrageous proposal at best and has the smell of patronage throughout. The current allocation enjoyed by guide outfitters is significantly better than in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba and our neighbours to the south. And they want more! The minister in charge, Steve Thomson, indicates some guiding businesses were in jeopardy and he wants “to increase the likelihood of success for those businesses.” So he has taken a personal interest in the possible hardship of a few businesses to propose a radical move advantageous to all guide outfitters and disadvantaging resident hunters. This raises many disturbing questions which I am sure residents will be pondering. All of the resident hunters I have spoken to are opposed to this proposal. In fact, many do not understand the already generous allocation of the resource to the guide outfitters and would like to see the allocation fall in line with our neighbours. This would put the allocation at 90-10, (resident/guide outfitters), not the current 80-20 and certainly not the 70-30 proposal. ROB LITTLE, Cranbrook
