Suddenly, the phrase suicide prevention is really bothering me. - TopicsExpress

Suddenly, the phrase suicide prevention is really bothering me. Like that moment is the one that matters. As opposed to, say, all the struggles that led up to that moment. Its like focusing on the wedding and ignoring the reality of a marriage. It also demonizes the one and only thing that might end the suffering for some people. There is no such thing as a lifetime in a standardized way. Theyre different lengths for all of us, and the point must always be to help people find as much health and happiness in their lifetime as possible. Maybe that will reduce suicide, maybe not. But its certainly where the focus needs to be. Quality of life, not length. And for that matter, quality of death, not eradication of it.
