Sugar. Sweet and tasty. More-ish and tempting. But is sugar a sweet old friend that is secretly plotting your demise? A recent study showed that the single largest source of calories for Americans comes from sugar. Just check out this data... -- In 1700, the average person consumed 4 pounds of sugar per year. -- In 1800, the average person consumed 18 pounds of sugar per year. -- In 1900, individual consumption had risen to 90 pounds of sugar per year. -- In 2009, more than 50 percent of all Americans consume one-half pound of sugar PER DAY—translating to a whopping 180 pounds of sugar per year! It is also interesting to note that in 1893, there were fewer than three cases of diabetes per 100,000 people in the United States. Today, diabetes strikes almost 8,000 out of every 100,000 people. And if you are wanting to avoid getting colds and flu this winter - the affect sugar has on our immune systems is astounding! Eating any kind of sugar has the potential to reduce your bodys defenses by 75% or more for the following 4-6 hours! How does this work?! God made bacteria, viruses, and the like to literally be swallowed by a special type of cell called a phagocyte. This is a cell, such as a white blood cell, that engulfs and absorbs waste material, harmful microorganisms, or other foreign bodies in the bloodstream and tissues. These which blood cells require a certain amount of Vitamin C to function correctly and effectively. However, glucose has a chemical make-up similar to Vitamin C... which confuses the cells and destroys their bug-fighting abilities for up to 6 hours. Yes, I know it isnt popular. But the best healthy winter and boost your immune system tip I can share is - limit the sweets! ;) Have a healthy, happy January!!!
