Sukna Gold Cup from 1 Feb Siliguri, 29 January: Here’s some great news for football lovers in north Bengal. The 9th Sukna Gold Cup Football Tournament, which is being organised by the Sukna Games and Sports Association, will be held at the Sukna High School Ground in Sukna from 1 to 23 February. The general secretary, SGSA, Mr Suren Pradhan, who announced this at a press meet here today, said that a total of 24 teams ~ seven from Siliguri, two each from Nepal, Kurseong, Kalimpong and Darjeeling and one each from Assam, Sikkim, Punjab, Manipur, Meghalaya, Uttar Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Bhutan and Armed Police Brigade ~ will take part in the meet. Mr Pradhan said that besides attractive trophies, the winner and the runners-up will be awarded cash prizes of Rs 12 lakh and Rs 50,000 respectively. He said special prizes will also be awarded to the Player of the Tournament and the Man of the Final as well as the Highest Scorer, Best Striker, Best Keeper, Best Goal Scorer, Best Senior Player and Most Promising Player of the Meet. He added that the championships, the budget for which had been pegged at Rs 20 lakh, will be inaugurated by Mr Jag Mohan, Commissioner of Police, Siliguri Commissionerate and the legendary footballer Mr Shyam Thapa would be present at the closing ceremony on 23 February 2014. sns
