Sultan commends Muslim, Catholic cordial relationship The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Saad Abubakar, on Saturday commended the cordial relationship existing between the Catholic community and people of the state. Abubakar made the commendation while receiving the Vatical Ambassador to Nigeria, Arch. Bishop Augustine Kasuja, in his palace in Sokoto. He said that this was made possible because of the exemplary leadership of the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Bishop Hassan Kukah. He explained that the Sultanate council would continue to cooperate with the Diocese in promoting religious tolerance and understanding among the people of the state. Abubakar called for more religious harmony among Nigerians for peace, progress and unity of the country. He said that the leaders of the two major religious must come out with an educative forum that would sensitise the faithful on the need to respect and adhere the teaching of their religions. The Islamic leader said that such would bring to an end lack of understanding and hatred among Nigerians in line with religious teachings. Speaking earlier, Kasuja acknowledged the effort of the Sultanate council towards promoting religious harmony in the country. He said that as the representative of the pope he was in the palace to wish the Sultan as head of the Muslim community in Nigeria a happy Ramadan and to all Muslims in Nigeria. He explained that he was in the state on a pastoral visit at the invitation of Kukah to inspect ongoing projects in the Sokoto diocese, comprising Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara and Katsina states
