Summary, Day 5 (Women’s Round 2) Italy, Netherlands: clean sheets, so far Hungary and Spain bounced back, the Netherlands and Italy stand with two respective wins after two days: the final round of the prelims on Sunday cannot be any more exciting. In the top two matches of the day Italy pipped the Russians with a rather convincing performance (13-10). They gained control right at the beginning, and built a 3-goal lead by half-time. Led by Roberta Bianconi – who netted four goals – the Italians went further ahead in the third (5-9), Russia climbed back a bit (7-9) but the following two Italian goals virtually ended the contest with eight minutes to go (7-11). It might have been even worse from a Russian perspective (7-13 with 4:45 on the clock) but they pulled three back in the remaining time. Hungary recovered from the opening day’s shock: after losing to the Netherlands the hosts wanted to present something from their real knowledge and played with the utmost determination. It quickly appeared on the scoreboard as they took a 3-0 lead in eight minutes, much to the joy of the crowd (at least 3,500 fans cheered for the team). The Greeks came back to 4-3, but the Magyars rebuilt their 3-goal lead by half-time (6-3). Though Greece defeated their rivals in the World League qualifiers both home and away, this time they couldn’t come any closer, what’s more, the Hungarians could even extend the gap with great goals (Dora Antal scored 3 from 3 shots). The hosts’ goalie, Flora Bolonyai enjoyed a wonderful day, stopping 13 shots (on 20 attempts) for a 65% saving percentage. The Netherlands learnt the lesson from the opening day when the Greeks struggled a bit against Great Britain. The Dutch held their opponent under pressure, the Brits could keep on until half-time (5-4), but in the second their rivals were superior, producing a 7-2 partial score. Spain had an easy cruise against France: they beat them in the qualification tournament 18-5, now it finished 18-4 with Roser Tarrago netting 6 goals. In fact, she made it from 6 shots, way better percentage than she had in the opening day (3/10)… Results, Day 5 Women, Round 2 Group A Great Britain vs. Netherlands 5-11 Hungary vs. Spain 12-7 Classification: 1.
