Summary of March 11, 2014, Meade School Board meeting Soccer will gradually be integrated into the Sturgis Brown High School athletic department’s offerings over the next five years, beginning with the 2014-15 school year. It will become a fully sanctioned sport, totally under the control of the school district, in 2019-20. The transition resolution approved by the school board at Tuesday’s meeting will enable the Sturgis Soccer Association to be South Dakota High School Athletic Association-eligible during the five-year transition period even though it is still considered a club sport. The vote was 5-3 to approve. Bob Burns, Dennis Chowen, Chad Legner, Courtney Mack and Curt Nupen voted “yes;” Shelli Grinager, Juanita Harrington and Don Williamson voted “no;” and Bryce Richter abstained. The first step in annexing three schools into nearby cities was approved by the board. In a unanimous vote, the members authorized Board President Burns to sign a petition requesting annexation of the Piedmont Valley Elementary School property into the City of Piedmont. The motion regarding the voluntary annexation of the Stagebarn property into the City of Summerset passed on an 8-1 vote, with Richter voting “no.” The voluntary annexation of Sturgis Brown High School into the City of Sturgis carried on a 7-2 vote, with Harrington and Richter voting “no.” In other action, the board: •Accepted the retirements of Lynn McFarland, special education teacher, Sturgis Williams Middle School; Diane Goodhope, teacher, Sturgis Brown High School; Paula Vukonich, special education teacher, Sturgis Williams Middle School; and Betty McGough, teacher, Piedmont Valley Elementary, all effective the end of the 2013-14 school year. •Accepted the retirement of Kathleen Thomson, special education paraprofessional, Sturgis Brown High School, effective May 23, 2014. •Accepted the resignations of Alissa Adams, librarian/media specialist, Sturgis Brown High School and Sturgis Williams Middle School; Kevin Chase, teacher, Sturgis Brown High School; and Jessica Kusser, teacher, Hereford, all effective the end of the 2013-14 school year. •Accepted the resignations of Betty Gunn, general food service worker, Sturgis Williams Middle School, effective Feb. 21; and Susan Witt, special education paraprofessional, Sturgis Williams Middle School, effective the end of the 2013-14 school year. •Approved the change of assignment of Haley Davenport from TLC paraprofessional to TLC teacher, Sturgis Williams Middle School, effective Feb. 20. •Heard that the April 8 school board meeting will be held at the high school. Dinner, which begins at 5:15 p.m., will be prepared and served by the SBHS culinary arts students. •Heard from Superintendent Don Kirkegaard that the district’s out-of-pocket expenses for the $3 million renovation of Sturgis Williams Middle School will be approximately $500,000, which includes approximately $300,000 for air conditioning. •Approved the $795,720 purchase of Apple MacBook Air laptops for the high school. “We want to send out the purchase orders this week,” explained the superintendent, “because we want to lock in the inservice dates for the high school staff.”
