Summer Jane Lyon, our 12 year old daughter will be riding horseback in the parade as Mattie Ross. Mattie Ross was a character in the book True Grit by Charles Portis. Some of you may have seen the movie with John Wayne as Rooster Cogburn. It was also remade in 2010 with Jeff Bridges as Rooster. Here is some info from the Kansas City Public Library website. True Grit is part of The Big Read program. Community Kick-Off: The American Royal Parade: A Star Spangled Salute Joining forces for the first time in Kansas City Big Read history, the Kansas City Public Library and American Royal will mark the community kick-off of this year’s celebration of Charles Portis’ True Grit at the American Royal’s 88th annual parade. Library Director Crosby Kemper III portrays True Grit’s Marshal Rooster Cogburn—complete with period western wear and eye-patch—and rides a horse up Grand Boulevard in the company of others playing additional characters from the novel. The parade, which is composed of nearly 4,000 participants, features active-duty and veteran members of the military, marching bands, vintage cars, saddle clubs, civic groups, and decked-out parade floats and pays tribute to America’s military.
