Summer Slide doesn’t just affect reading. During the summer, students can lose, on average, 2.6 months of math skills. To ensure your children retain these skills over the summer there are many fun activities you can do with your child. For younger students, practice counting and number recognition that are related to your summer outings. Have kids count groups of seashells on the beach or leaves in the yard. Allow students to practice estimating by having them guess how long various road trips in the car will take. Give your child daily math challenges from a workbook to keep their skills sharp. For older students learning fractions, cook with them and measure out ingredients for practice. And to combine math and reading skills, have students keep a reading log and then add up the minutes at the end of each week!
