Sunday - Mass at Oratory - which seems quite Puritan now the Christmas decadence is gone - everything being relative. Home through the cold and into the warm. I made a nice cauliflower and stilton soup and we cooked one of my Xmas Puddings - which I thought were a bit iffy but turned out to be moist and delicious - and light! Got a twinge of herpes back - Im guessing the underlying stress of the house is in play. Im being mercifully brief and leave you as Im listening to some Adolphe Adam - Le Toreador - notable for the fact one of the arias is plainly twinkle twinkle little star but its really rather lovely. Mercadante La Vestale was not half as good as the others - and as my dear friend Ralph pointed out Callas sang the Spontini Vestale - so I had not heard it before. The Charpentier included as Mass for the Assumption and some Litanies in addition to the Te Deum. that said - it can be a bit repetitive - pleasant enough but Im afraid Id have been nodding off in the court of the Sun King...although Im sure it would have suited Madame de Maintenon who had very conservative musical tastes top match her strict religious observances. Bon nuit my dears...
