Sunday 18th May – Brisbane Weekend Wrap So far the winter weather is proving pretty favourable for cricket – slightly cool conditions, but sunshine and clear skies prevailing. Dew can be a bit of an issue with some of the morning games – that’s the excuse I got from one team for their batting effort last week – but by and large runs are still fairly easy to come by. One thing I’ve noticed – and this is just a suggestion, but some of our games have wrapped up pretty quickly, because the team batting first got bowled out quite cheaply by a (presumably) better side, and then had their score chased down in short order. Now, I don’t know how the tosses went down, and who decided to do what. But generally speaking, if you know you’re one of those teams that struggles with the bat a bit, playing a team you know has your measure, you should consider bowling first if you win the toss. You’ll get value for money in terms of game time, more of your guys will get to bowl – yes, you might have to chase some leather if the other team racks up a big first innings score, but more game time can only result in more improvement. It’s also a nice gesture to the other team, since they’ve got 8 guys all keen to hopefully have a bat. Plus you get to bowl with a brand new ball. And if you’re not that great in the bowling department, the seam should be nice and flat by the time the other team get their hands on it, which makes for easier batting. Anyways, something to keep in mind. Let’s get on with the review. Some high scoring games, some close games and a few mismatches this week – let’s go through and see who starred, stood up and otherwise stood out this weekend. North Brisbane – 1 Shooters XI batted first against Jayhawks, and despite losing a couple of very early wickets, managed to get going in the middle order somewhat, and racked up 133 for 7 off their 20 overs. Dean Richardson was the mainstay with the bat, putting together almost half his side’s runs with 60 off 33. For Jayhawks, Mehul Mandewalkar took 3/27, while Joel Hall was very economical off his 4 overs, taking 1/15 – a very decent return on the high scoring Newmarket ground. In reply, Abish Musthafa got his team off to a flying start, bringing up his half century in only 22 balls, putting Jayhawks well ahead of the run rate. Further contributions from Lawrence ‘Big Tasty’ Moran with 27 and Joel Hall with 30* ensured Jayhawks got over the line in 14.3 overs, securing them a bonus point. Ben Niland-Rowe was the pick of the Shooters bowlers, with 1/18 off 4 overs. Tap That faced off against Cool Runnings, with Tap That batting first, putting together a very defendable score of 163/8 off 20 overs – Dave Broughton continued his excellent run of form with 50*, having made 20+ in his last 11 innings – while Nick Murphy also was in the runs, with 60* off just 28 balls. In reply, Brett Bednarski leathered 64 at the top of the order for Cool Runnings, and they were well on top of the required rate throughout, but a series of run outs fatally hamstrung their chase, eventually running out of cool, and wickets, at 122 after 14.3 overs, 41 runs short. Dave Broughton showed he’s a man of many talents, taking 3/25 with the ball off 3.3 overs. Finally, Hadnun & Humble Hibernators took the field in what proved to be a battle of the bats – batting first Hadnun scored freely to bring up 3/182 off their 20 overs. Nick Byrnes scored 54*, and there were heady contributions from Brendan McDonald (41), Trent Belcomb (32) and Cameron Belcomb with 47*. Gaurang Joshi proved deceptive with the ball, keeping the brakes (breaks?) on with his tweakers to finish with 4/26 off 4 overs. In reply, Humble Hibernators sent Gaurang & Rob Callinan out to bat, and despite 34 from the former, and 50* off 22 from the latter, Humble’s middle order couldn’t quite keep up with the required scoring rate, eventually finishing on 160/4 after 20 overs, 22 runs short. Sean Robison bowled a tight spell to finish 0/20 off 4 overs, with wickets being shared amongst the Hadnun bowlers. North Brisbane – 2 Those of you who frequent this page will know the result already of the first game between DGAF Internationals and the 12th Men, but there’s no harm in retelling how it all came about. The seeds of DGAF’s victory were perhaps sown the night before when the bulk of the 12th Men were at Matt Dunphy’s 21st birthday party – while some of them usually rock up a bit worse for wear on Saturday morning anyway, this seemed a particularly tough morning for the lads. Figuring that bowling first would get it out of the way, the 12th Men sent DGAF in, and they took advantage of the regular quicks not taking the new ball in lieu of sobering up, Dylan Comerford with 29 and Eugene Hawkins with 66* laying a solid opening partnership. The middle order hit out or got out – mostly out – but there was enough contributions across the board to get DGAF up to 6/148 after 20 overs. Liam Bartle shook off the after-effects to take 2/11, while part-time trundler Ben Taylor scored 1/13 off his 3 overs. With bodies strewn all over the grass in the dressing room, the 12th Men seemed in control early on, after the loss of Ben Taylor – but when Matt Dunphy was bowled for 20 off a ball that jagged back alarmingly, and Josh Neville was run out for 32 at the non-strikers end thanks to a deflected straight drive by Jono Crawford, the innings fell away rapidly – a succession of batters coming and going as the 12th Men tried to get the rate up. The going was chiefly due to Dylan Comerford, who ripped a swathe through the lower order to finish with 4/8 off 3.3 overs, cruelly denied a five-for by unsympathetic teammates who ran out last man Peter Taylor. I say denied, as judging from Peter’s technique, and without intending any disrespect, a dismissal was probably only a straight yorker away. But it didn’t matter, DGAF had their first win, an emphatic one, coming out victors by 48 runs. The second game saw the B Sharps bat first against new lads Chibasco, and proved that last week’s score was an aberration, racking up a solid 157/5 - regular linchpin Tyson Bradford struck 50*, while Stuart Bailey monstered 24 off just 9 balls, including 3 consecutive sixes over midwicket. James Kelder chipped in with 42 at the top of the order. Shane Hajetian was the pick of the bowlers for Chibasco, bowling spinners at a tough angle, and picking up 3/20 off 4 overs, while Scott Ullman was unlucky not to collect a wicket, finishing with 0/19 off his 4. In reply, Chibasco started slowly, and were looking to accelerate through Zane Scott and Scott Ullman, when Zane was bowled for 15. When Scott also fell for 44, cleaned up by a ball that kept low, the innings tailed away, with Chibasco finishing at 109/7 off their 20 overs. South Brisbane – 1 Unwatchables met BrisVegas Blasters in a game shifted to Newmarket due to scheduling, and both teams took full advantage of the short boundary behind the bowler, hitting the two highest scores of the weekend. Unwatchables batted first, and despite missing a few of their regular names, still slogged their way to 4/212 – fifties from Ged McMahon and Shaun McCrystal formed the bedrock of their score, with strong contributions from the lower order as well. Wynand Breytenbach was the only bowler to really get in the contest, taking 2/22 off his 4 overs (Richie Benaud would be most pleased). In reply, there was a fair chunk of blasting by BrisVegas, particularly from Hesten Erwin, who smeared 57* off 23 at the top of the order. The middle order struggled to fire, but a late order explosion from Huzefa Kamrudeen with 50* off 27 coming in at number 7, probably furrowed a few brows in the Unwatchables camp. In the end though, 212 proved too much of an obstacle to surmount, with Brisvegas Blasters falling 22 runs short, at 5/190. The second game in this division, down at Balmoral, saw Brisbane AllSorts batting first against Monster Inc. Justin Harper & Amit Kalsi scored the bulk of the runs at the top of the order, with 32 & 21, but the rest of the team struggled to get going against some very economical bowling, with AllSorts eventually all out for 78 after 20 overs. In reply, Monsters Inc were untroubled in chasing it down, Brett Baxter with 50* and David Skipper with 34*, leisurely overhauling the target in 11.1 overs. South Brisbane – 2 Raging Johnsons and First XI met in a game that turned out to be quite evenly matched in the end – Raging Johnsons batted first, and had the Bakers lead the way – Matt with 29 and Luke with 30 proving the mainstay of the innings, as they helped erect the Johnsons up to a score of 5/121. Conor Dowdall with 1/19 off 4 overs was the best of the bowlers for the first XI. In reply, the first XI batting card was led by John Bullion with 29 and Peter McKenna with 40, as they eventually overhauled the target after 18.1 overs. Credit has to go to Ryan Grebert from the Johnsons for the outstanding bowling return of 0/10 off 4 overs – very miserly figures on the Balmoral ground, or any ground for that matter. In the second game, Furious Masterbatters were rolled for 53 off 15.2 overs against Thunder Strikers, with Harshad Jakatey taking 3/6 off 3 overs, while Channabasappa Gojanur pitched in with 3/11 off his 3 overs. With such a small total, it wasn’t going to take long to chase it down, Ravi Gandhi thumping 35 off 18 to get Thunder Strikers over the line after 6 overs. The final game saw Dingers take on Soy Quearns and the Wood Moths, and with Dingers being dropped for 62 after 10 overs, that surely wasn’t going to trouble Moths – Eugene Hawkins fresh from his cameo appearance for DGAF earlier in the day getting them home, with a wide-eyed 43* off 24 balls. Special thanks to the nameless Moths administrator who put nicknames in for all the Moths players on the website and didn’t let me know, took me 10 minutes last week to work out Roy Kwan was actually Soy Quearns when keying in all the stats. Much appreciated! Fixtures are up on the website for next week - grounds are as listed. Best of luck to players!
