Sunday, December 14, 2014 Text: “And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures, Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ. “ - Acts 17:2, 3. Comment: It was the custom of St. Paul to attend services in the synagogue and to debate with the Jews so as teach them of the new era that had dawned in the relationship of God with His people. His reference point was the Scriptures. In Corinth where he stayed with Aquila, and his wife Priscilla “he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks”. (Acts 18:1-4) At Ephesus St. Paul “went into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, disputing and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God.” (Acts 19:8) While testifying before Agrippa he declared, “Having therefore obtained help of God, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come: That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles.” (Acts 26:22, 23) Within three days of arriving in Rome, having appealed to Caeser, St. Paul held a meeting with the leaders of the Jews. The record in Acts states that many of the Jews came to his lodging “to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening”. (Acts 28:23) It was from Rome Paul asked Timothy to ensure that he comes with “ the books, but especially the parchments” (2 Timothy 4:13) We too should cultivate the habit of studying, of proclaiming the truth with zeal and defending it whenever we have the opportunity. See Jude 3; psalm 68:11; Revelation 22:17.
