Sunday, November 9: Veterans, Part 3 I was honored this - TopicsExpress

Sunday, November 9: Veterans, Part 3 I was honored this afternoon to be able to take an American flag, kneel before the wife of a World War II veteran, and offer the following words: On behalf of a grateful nation and a proud Navy, I present this flag to you in recognition of Bills years of honorable and faithful service to his country.” Bill served on the USS Nuthatch, a mine sweeper that saw service in the Atlantic. He spent two years aboard this vessel, faithfully serving America and her people during a critical time in our nations history. I was privileged to be his pastor for six years, and grew to know him well during this time. Bills leadership in both church and community was exemplary, and I credit his military experience with preparing him for this. As our nations veterans are discharged today, the leadership skills that they offer cannot be measured. The image of combat-weary vets who are dangerous to society tarnishes not only their reputations, but the branches of service in which they served. Most vets return to their communities and, like Bill, make a positive difference, just like Bill did during World War II. Every day, I commit to making a difference in my community, if for no other reason than to dispel the myth of the drug-crazed Vietnam vet. Bill certainly represented his generation well. I will miss him, but I will do my best to continue his legacy of offering a positive witness to the military community and a willingness to make a difference where I live.
