Sunday night @HBO airs #LarryKramer’s “#TheNormalHeart,” @NormalHeartHBO, starring @MarkRuffalo, #JuliaRoberts and #MattBomer. The movie is based on Mr. Kramer’s semi-autobiographical groundbreaking play about the onset of the AIDS crisis, which premiered as a play in 1984. Now 78 and in poor health, Mr. Kramer‘s play was revived on Broadway three years ago, garnering several Tony nominations as well as wins for actors Ellen Barkin and John Benjamin Hickey. With gay marriage now approved in 17 states (plus the District of Columbia), HBO’s screening of this important film could not be more timely. About the movie, here’s the last paragraph from a May 20 Washington Post quote from Richard Cohen’s article “Just another love story”: “HBO’s ‘The Normal Heart’ has concussive power. It is a gripping drama — some of it downright shocking, but it is, for all of that, just another love story. That it can be seen this way testifies to how far America has come since Eddie the private eye told me it was good sport to beat up gays.
