Sunday we had to pull out of Medora, ND so we headed north to Williston, ND, an oil boom town, where folks had warned us it was dirty and torn up with no RV spaces to be had. I had been shocked to find on the internet, Lewis & Clark State Park just 18 miles west of town with many sites available. We drove into the park knowing we had a reservation in space 69 waiting for us! What a beautiful park! This past weekend they had celebrated Christmas in July and folks decorated their rigs and spaces in very creative ways including flamingos done up as Santas. Kids had chalk drawings all over the road! It was beautiful. The sites are 80 foot long back-ins with a good 30 feet between sites. We were just sitting in the rig after setting up when God decided to give us a show! Suddenly we had a downpour! Folks were running for cover not caring whose awning they were under. Then besides rain, hail blasted us for about 20 minutes with pellets the size of Bing cherries, but when it stopped, the clouds went away, and except for the few pellets left and some puddles, there was no sign of the storm. The next morning we stopped at the office/store to buy coffee for our trip. The ranger stopped us and chatted for more than 15 minutes about life in general. The “lady” that had checked us in was working. He told us in the middle of August she would be leaving him again to return to school. We asked her what she was majoring in and discovered she was a junior in high school! What a shock! Last spring, she had gotten her driver’s license! The previous two summers she had worked at the park she walked three miles to work. Worked her six to eight hour shift, and then walked three miles home! What a work ethic! The ranger said the coffee was on him and we headed down the road. We stopped in Glasgow for two nights. We stayed at Shady Rest RV. The park was older and facilities could be improved, but the campground was shaded, full hookups, it had a laundry and book exchange. The woman managing the park was curt at first, but when I talked with her I understood. She needed the job and the owner insisted she work 19 hours a day as he did not want to pay two employees. She had to have the office open from 6:00 am, until midnight! This gave her a monthly salary and a place to live. He relieved her one day a week! Talk about slave labor! The first night I did laundry and we rested! Had a BLTA salad for dinner which was perfect! The next day we visited the VFW, a few normal stores, and a great “women’s charity” second hand store. It was having a $10 bag sale. I got a Pyrex 7x11 glass baking dish, Joe got a book and I filled up the bag with shorts and shirts I hope will fit me, but if they don’t they’ll fit one of my granddaughters. We shopped for groceries, and decided to go home and enjoy a slow cooked in my convection oven cowboy steak dinner. The gravy was sautéed onions, mushrooms, garlic, the wine for a cooking liquid thickened with a corn starch mixture… Oh so good! The next morning we drove to Havre. I had decided for us that I did not want to stay with our rigs next to Highway 2 and be charged $40 a night so we drove 3 ½ miles south on Highway 87 to the Evergreen Campground. This was 7 acres of grass and hookups. The dogs got out, rolled in the grass and romped all over the acreage. We caught up with them and luckily had the leashes with so we had their blue bags! All sites except pull-thrus have full hookups and only $29.70. I chose a pull-thru as we did not need to dump and I did not think we needed to unhook! Joe had other plans. We took a run to Wal-Mart and then went to a local Pizza takeout or delivery joint. It is called Nalivka’s. https://facebook/pages/Nalivkas-Original-Pizza-Kitchen/254535854584640 It is a cash or check only business! It is located in a house. The owner was the cook. Her mom and dad came from Italy and started this business. She inherited it and hasn’t changed a thing. She is now teaching her nephew, maybe 50 years old, the family business! They make their own dough, sauces, sausages, and whatever. Their large pizza in only 14”, but it is made Chicago style! She said her busiest time of year is Christmas Eve. She gets orders from all over the United States and overnights them partially cooked then frozen! She stands maybe five foot and looks like she really enjoys everything she does! She also had a Shrimp Louie Salad on sale which we bought to share! We rushed back to the camp to devour it! The salad dressing is Thousand Island was also homemade! Boy do I want her recipes. We were careful to leave two pieces for breakfast the next morning. I normally would have heated it up, but was in a hurry to head down the road so ate it cold! I don’t like cold pizza but this was heaven. We hooked up and headed out! Arrived at Stanton Creek Resort at Glacier. Will talk about Glacier in the next post…
