Sunflower Fire Update July 22, 2014 AM Summary: Fire activity moderated yesterday due to cooler temperature that created favorable conditions for a planned burnout opperation. The burnout along Forest Road 24 (Indian Creek Road) was successfuly completed. This 500 acre burnout allowed crews to strengthen containment lines. Crews worked through the night to put out hot spots and monitor the fire. Current Situation: Firefighters are making excellent progress securing the fire perimeter. The fire has not crossed Indian Creek Road. Some torching of trees and smoldering is expected today, particularly in the Little Wilson Creek and Big Willow Creek drainages where larger trees have fallen. Firefighters will concentrate on extinguishing these hotspots. Crews are also conducting mop-up and dozer line repair activities in the northern fire area. Announcement: A community meeting will be held in Monument, Oregon, at the Senior and Community center at 1:00 pm. Fire personnel will be on hand to discuss the fires progress and answer any questions. All are invited and welcome to attend. Weather: Precipitation was received over the fire last night, but it was not enough to throughly wet ground fuels. This cold front will bring cooler temperatures today. Showers with possible thunderstorms are forecasted through Wednesday and will significantly moderate fire activity. Area Fire Closures: An area closure was again expanded on July 19 around the fire for firefighter and public safety.
