As part of an audit of the company, government officials found that the ferry’s operators put profits over safety, according to a CNN report. The government agency says it is planning on punishing the operators, which was also accused of loading too much cargo onto the ship during previous trips. 292 people were killed in the disaster. Of the 476 passengers and crew on board, 339 were children and teachers from the same school on the outskirts of Seoul. The ship’s captain and several crew members are facing charges in connection with the sinking. The government board also said officials from the Coast Guard and Ministry of Security and Public Administration performed poorly in the initial response to the disaster.
