Superlative words of praise heaped on Wan Azizah? Yes, but believe me, every word has the ring of truth. Her virtues, her steadfast adherence to principles and her moral courage and determination would put all the prominent women among BN’s ruling elite to shame. Her appointment to the Selangor MB’s post would mark a landmark of Malaysia’s gradual emergence from feudalistic and religious prejudice and discrimination against women, and she would become the beacon for other women to emulate. The conservative faction in PAS must, in particular, realise that their mental block against women heading a government is sheer prejudice without religious foundation, and their acceptance of Wan Azizah’s ascendance to the apex of the Selangor administration at this instant would certainly go a long way towards redeeming the party’s tattered image acquired in the current Selangor MB crisis.
