The Garage- 1510 Ohialoke Street, Honolulu, Hawai’i, 96821. The Garage, a new gallery/salon in Honolulu, is pleased to present its inaugural exhibition featuring artists from New York and Hawaii. This collaborative exhibition grew out of a trip to New York by University of Hawai’i students and recent alumni in the MFA and BFA programs led by UH Drawing and Painting Professor, Debra Drexler. The Hawai’i artists met with curators, dealers, artists, art critics and writers. A number of the curators and writers are also artists who are participating in the exhibit. Susan Callahan Kang was inspired to start the gallery after visiting Parallel Art Space a gallery founded in Bushwick, Brooklyn by Rob De Oude and Enrico Gomez who are participating in the exhibit. Featured artists (curators and writers) from New York will be Liam Davis, Rob De Oude, Linda DiGusta, Enrico Gomez, and Michele Zalopany. Zalopany is an internationally recognized artist of Native Hawaiian decent who was featured in the 1989 Whitney Biennial. In addition to co-founding Parallel Art Space, De Oude has been exhibited throughout Europe and Asia and his work has been featured in Sculpture Magazine, the NY Post and NY Arts Magazine. Gomez co-founded Parallel Art Space and exhibits his work internationally and writes criticism for Wagmag, Esse, Art and Opinions among others. DiGusta an artist, curator and writer is the co-founder of the on-line magazine Resolve40 and has written for The Huffington Post. Liam Davis received his MFA in Printmaking from the University of Hawai’i. Since then he has been working in New York as a curator for Artifact Gallery and as an artist. Artists from Hawai’I include Susan Callahan Kang (BFA, 2013), Jodie Chock (BFA, 2013), Roland Longstreet, Mari Maeda, Nicole Naone (BFA, 2013), Jessica Orfe (MFA, 2013), and Debra Drexler, curator (UH Professor). Since graduation Naone and Orfe have been actively exhibiting in Honolulu. Debra Drexler has exhibited at White Box, HP Garcia Gallery, Exit Art, Denise Bilbro Gallery, Sideshow Gallery in New York and at Mark’s Garage and Honolulu Museum in Honolulu. She has studios in New York and Kailua.
