Support Your Child(ren): To Be Or Not To Be? Thats the ultimate - TopicsExpress

Support Your Child(ren): To Be Or Not To Be? Thats the ultimate question! Attended my sons first theatrical debut at George Washington (GW) High School, Danville, VA over the weekend. GWs Theatre Guild presented a stage play entitled, Leading Ladies. A little skeptical but hey, Im my sons BIGGEST FAN and GW Alumni. The play was about two gentlemen (actors) from England who decide to impersonate as women to con a family out of their inheritance (from what I gathered). The Production was AWESOME! I laughed, clapped and cheered for these students. Great stage presentation, few bumps of nervousness; overall, wonderful performance! I have to commend all the students; especially the two guys dressing as ladies throughout the performance. It took guts to perform in this manner. Lets face it; how many of us can withstand public speaking without getting nervous? As a motivational speaker, I can attest its not easy (the crowd can be brutal at times). This was a bit of a shock that my son NOW wants to get into theater (when he first started high school, he wanted to be a Chef. What I do know, hes NOT interested in sports after paying all that money in Soccer!). As with many teenagers, theyll change their minds about their future dozens of times before they actually find their niche (what they want in life). The point is, support your child(ren)s interest in school or out-of-school extracurricular activities and INVEST in their future. Enroll your child(ren) in programs (activities) that develops analytical skills (abilities to solve problems) and comprehensive skills (ability to understand what they learn). You may not be aware but extracurricular activities instill important social and behavioral skills that help build positive relationships and coping in society. Extracurricular activities include, band/chorus (believe it or not, instruments help kids IQ and reading skills); sports (discipline and coordination); theater (public speaking, reading, self-esteem, etc.); newspaper/yearbook/journalism (reading and writing skills); computer camps (math & technical skills); science activities (learning and environmental engagement); dance (coordination and discipline); Chess (analytical skills); sign language; and so much more (whatever happened to home economics in high school? thats where I learned to cook and sew!). Contact your child(ren) schools, Boys & Girls Club, 4-H Programs, Girls Scouts, Boy Scouts, Parks & Recreation Programs, etc. for more information. You never know who or what your child(ren) may be in their future.
