Supporting Malian Artists’ Participation at #UNGA #USAID/OTI recognizes that a key component of #Malis transition to peace is the restoration of its rich cultural heritage, which serves as a visible and vibrant alternative to the extremist oppression imposed during the occupation of the North and unites all Malians. As a result, the program provided strategic support to the Timbuktu Renaissance by funding travel and lodging for a group of Malian artists, including Manny Ansar, the director of Timbuktus Festival au Désert, to participate in cultural events at the United Nations General Assembly. The trip culminated with a concert featuring the Festival in Exile, which aimed to raise awareness and generate support for the Timbuktu Renaissance Project. Held on September 20, the concert featured artists, such as Oumou Sangare and Vieux Farka Touré. Both Malis Minister of Culture and the US Ambassador to the United Nations, Samantha Power, attended.
