Surprise!: Magician gives disabled veteran new car and free rent for a year Rob Anderson has begun to gain attention for his elaborate “tricks” that are actually set-ups for large gifts to disabled veteran. “You deserve it. Your service to the country [allows] me the life that I want to live,” Anderson tells one veteran, Johnny Hicks, and his wife in his latest video. “Me being able to do this, what I want to do. You provided that for me, and a lot of other people.” Hicks, a Navy veteran who was told before filming the video that Anderson would be interviewing him for a documentary, explains that he lost his job after taking time off for kidney surgery, leaving him and his wife unable to cover their bills and in danger of losing their home. “We don’t even have money to eat right now,” his wife can be heard saying off-camera. “We don’t even know if we’re eating tonight.” Anderson then begins unveiling his gifts to Hicks and his wife, starting with $1,000 he said came from donors. He then takes the couple and their children outside, where he reveals a set of furniture to replace the items the family lost to mold in their previous home. The magician then provides envelopes containing money and gift cards for new clothes, grocery bills, and home repairs for Hicks. Anderson then tells Hicks he will cover his rent for a year, bringing both Hicks and his wife to tears. “We were getting really scared,” Hicks says. Finally, Anderson reveals what he calls the “big surprise”: a new car for Hicks, prompting Hicks to embrace him in gratitude. Last month, a video of Anderson pretending to rip up a homeless veteran’s sign before giving him a large sum of money gained enough traction online to amass around 6 million views by this week. Anderson subsequently raised more than $40,000 online for this veteran, identified as Alan McKracken. He explains in the introduction to his segment with Hicks that McKracken only took a portion of the money, however, and moved to California to pursue steady employment.
