Surprising it may sound,but despite the ban imposed on the use of polythene,Guwahati city is not going to become a completely polythene free city,it just fills the pockets of law inforced persons. The Government drives like sealing the godown,seizing polythene and realizing fines will serve no purpose unless an alternative compostable environment-friendly material is provided or to made people aware and force anyhow,to carry coir or cotton bags,with them while marketing or shopping, which can be used for longer times,to shun the use of polythene. Further,the Government has,on the other hand no positive steps has been taken to stop the manu facture of polythene. The Assam government should must adopt realistic measures by banning the manufacturing of polythene and side by side the import of polythene bags from neibouring states should immediately stopped to keep all the NE states clean and environment friendly.
